    TFF's Top 100 Videogames 2008! [Voting]

It's that time again, apparently. Thought i'd get the thread up a bit earlier this time, since activity has been slow lately and i wanted to let people have the time to vote.

Sooo, all you need to do is post your top 15 games. Also add which console you played it on, or if it was PC just put that in. I'll try and get individual lists up this year aswell as the top 100 list.

    An example would be:

    1. Fallout 3 (PC)
    2. Need for Speed: Undercover (PS3)
    Etc...

I'll leave this open until the end of the month, possibly a few days before, so i can get the results up at the turn of the new year. I'll leave the other thread stickied until voting is finished aswell.

    Because we're clones and stuff.

    Memorable Quotes:
    Rachel : I hear you're advanced in twittery. =D
    Rocco : PhD level. =D
    Rachel : And beyond. =D

Ann: It's like asking someone "How do you brush your teeth?"
"What's your methods of toenail cutting?" "How do you get rid of nosehairs?"

Jules: Bullshit. She thought it happened.
Rocco: It was that quick huh?

    Cilla: Closets are so hot.

    TFF vs. World's Biggest Idiots:
    Matt :
    y = X x T
    -----
    C x V
    y= -6
Rachel : For what, may I ask? Your intelligence?
    Let X, T, C and V all equal zero.
Rachel : And you'd still come up with -6, because, let's face it, you're not the brightest spark.

TOM: thought id take a pic of mine [his penis] and show u's
    TOM: its nice aye
    George: i wanan touch it

TOM: i will go ****ing hulk on your ass ok
.::.Sammy.::. : ill go like super sayian 5

    Quotes of Lily's:

    Hayden says:
r u sure theres not a man standing behind u with a knife
    Rachel says:
    Quite sure.
    Hayden says:
    maybe its me
    Rachel says:
I seriously doubt that your IQ is high enough for it to occur to you that you cannot walk through solid objects.

=Lily on Freema Agyeman [Slightly paraphrased]=
Lily says: Freema is so pretty.
Lily says: I wish I was her.
Lily says: She is mind-bogglingly sexy.
Lily says: Seriously, if I had to choose between her and David Tennant, I'd SO choose her.
Lily says: *glomps Freema to death and rips her clothes off*

Well, they're in no particular order, honestly, even though, for some reason I did them by system O.o. I like too many categories to rate them exactly. That and I'm missing a few, Especially the Sega Genesis and Nintendo ones that raised me. Darnit. I'll get you in someday. I'm tempted to slash something for Eternal Champions or Street Fighter II or Saga Risk or Virtua fighter II or one of the Nintendo Zeldas. And the rest of the Tekken Series! Talk about other games that owned. This list is so deprived.

FFVIII's the only exception. It's in the #1 position because it just totally wreaks of ownage and nothing can compare.

This isn't hard, this is INSANE...!! It should really be a genre by genre concept (Jebus, I bet we could create a more than decent Top 100 RPGs list)...doing 'videogames' is ridiculous...Er, anyways, I'll try my best, but know I'm not doing it justice...

    1) Chrono Trigger (SNES/PSX/NDS)
    2) Final Fantasy VI (SNES/PSX/GBA)
    3) Final Fantasy Tactics (PSX)
    4) Capcom Vs. SNK 2: Millionaire Fighting 2001 (DC)
    5) Raiden II (Arcade)
    6) Quake III Arena (PC)
    7) Metroid 2: The Return of Samus (GB)
    8) Riviera: The Promised Land (GBA)
    9) Mega Man 2 (NES)
    10) Breath of Fire III (PSX)
    11) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES/GBA)
    12) Tecmo Super Bowl (NES)
    13) Armored Core 2: Another Age (PS2)
    14) Gran Tourismo 4 (PS2)
    15) Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (PS2)

Any of the Armored Core series works, though, that was the last I got to play, so it was the best...V_V

EDIT: Ack! I didn't realize I hadn't represented FPSs...sorry Tactics Ogre: Knight of the Lodis, I haven't even played you enough to have you in my top 15 anyways~!! It was a tossup with Q3A & UT...but I stand by my choice.

My god this is near impossible. Of course, my top 15 hasn't changed TOO drastically over the years. And perhaps I may post my top 100 like I did once upon a time. But where would be the excitement now that you will know which games you should play by having read my list here? =D

    15. Portal (Original Release October 9, 2007 on XBox 360 and Computer as part of the Orange Box. Now available on PS3, Computer (As a stand-alone game), and XBox Live Arcade) - What can I say about this game other than this one word: brilliant! It forces you to expand the way you think through innovative game play with the use of Portals. Over the course of its 19 levels, it is one challenge after another which will ultimately prepare you for the final level, where your mind and endurance will be put to a test before coming face to face with the mastermind known as GLaDOS. Who, by the way, totally takes the game and makes a good game become awesome. Think everything is all over now that you have beat the game? Wrong! Try the advanced maps (all six of them. I have only been able to pass three so far) if you want a challenge, because they certainly are a challenge! That not enough for you? How about going for Gold placement on the original levels (six of them, at least) using the least number of Portals, fewest steps, or fastest time. No one ever said GLaDOS was capable of showing mercy, and these challenges prove that she shows no kindness. When I bought my 360 a few weeks ago, the one game I bought at the same time with the Orange Box. In my eyes, the $20 price was worth it for this game alone. Give it a go, I am CERTAIN you will love it. You can snag the PC stand-alone game of it for $9.99 at Best Buy I believe. It will be the best $10 you ever spend.

    14. Tecmo Super Bowl (Original release 1991 on the Nintendo Entertainment System) - I have played my fair share of football games over the years. This game is unique in so many ways, that I must share some back story on this, to some extent at least. Growing up, I used to play this at a friend's house. He was a huge Chicago Bears fan. I am a die hard Minnesota Vikings fan. Since it was his game, we were always Da Bears. This is the ONLY football game where I, to this day, play as the Chicago Bears. I do not know what it is about this game that has captured my heart so much. I mean, it has been AGES since there was any challenge to it. I can win by doing nothing but running the ball. I can get 10+ sacks a game. I have scored over 100 points in a game. I can run in circles around defenders. And yet all of this still remains fun as well as a game that is near and dear to my heart. I am eager to get my hands on the new DS Tecmo Super Bowl. If it is anything like this one, I will enjoy playing it for years to come!

    13. Guitar Hero 3: Legends of Rock (Original Release October, 2007 on the 360, PS2, PS3, and Wii) - Given the amount of time I have devoted to playing the Guitar Hero games, it is no surprise one of them would make it into the top 15. This game took everything that Guitar Hero II did right and made it even better. The hammer-on and pull-off system is near perfect. The soundtrack is incredible (I still love playing Cliffs of Dover. What a great song!), and who doesn't like doing a Best of 5 Through the Fire and Flames endurance competition on Pro Face Off - Expert? While there are some parts of this game that are a little disappointing (Not a huge fan of Battle, Pro Face Off is far better), and the bonus tracks are not quite as great as the predecessors, it still has the crisp game play to make it the top Guitar Hero. I had hoped World Tour would blow me away. Sadly, its vocal system is inferior to Rock Band, and the struggles to activate Star Power, while humorous to watch, is a huge draw back. But that is another discussion for another thread.

    12. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Original Release November 21, 1992 on SEGA Genesis. Also available on the Game Gear, SEGA Mega Drive, and XBox Live Arcade) - Sonic the Hedgehog was to SEGA what Mario was to Nintendo. They both have their fair share of great games, and when it comes to Sonic this one is by far the best of them. It was the first Sonic game to feature the character Tails. While the game is a one-player game, you could have the second control take over the actions of Tails. The nice (yet broken) part of this is that while Tails can die, he has infinite lives. You could send him off into the midst of danger to try and get a hard-to-reach item with no risk to your lives. You could clear out a screen of baddies with no danger. You can double up on bosses and kill them twice as fast. So while this game was a classic when played alone, the thrills of teaming up are just as great. Sure, it made the game much easier, but it is the journey that is so great. Give it a play, the smooth controls and amazing sound track are well worth the 400 points on XBox Arcade for this gem. And if you have a Genesis but not this game (For shame!) I got my copy for 95 cents at a Gamers. You can't get a better game for a better price, I promise you.

    11. Super Mario World (Original Release November 21, 1990 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System/Super Famicom. Also available on the Game Boy Advance and the Virtual Console) - What is my list coming to that both Sonic and Mario failed to crack the top 10? When I think of Mario games, this is the one that is first to come to mind. It does so many things right, such as the introduction of everyone's favorite dinosaur. The sheer number of levels was amazing for its time. The power up it introduced was a lot of fun (although I think that 3 had better power ups, lol). The challenge of the star world and the Extra stages beyond were a great reward to the completionist (who could also monitor their progress through the game!) The stages are challenging, but not to the point where a casual gamer would be turned off by the game, which is a hard thing to do. If you really want a challenge give some of the mods a try that are out there. Or just YouTube it, you will see the insanity that some people have subjected themselves to with this game. Without question, this is the BEST release game that has ever launched with a console. Pick it up and find out why all over again.

    10. Final Fantasy Tactics (Original Release June 20, 1997 on the Playstation) - This game took a unique perspective on the Final Fantasy franchise. To stray from what had been successful may have been a gamble, but with that chance they allowed themselves to create the best Final Fantasy game in the newer era of Final Fantasy games (anything following the SNES ones, in my eyes). Hard to believe this game is eleven years old, and yet in my stubborn mind this isn't Old Skool to me. Ha ha, can you believe that? For those who have played this game through, the story line is fabulous, rivaled only by the one in Final Fantasy VIII in the newer era of Final Fantasy games. The job system is near flawless in this game, taking the success of Final Fantasy V and evolving it. The tactical battles remind me greatly of the reasons why I enjoyed games like Tactics Ogre so much. I mean, who could ask for better when you combine the brilliance of an RPG with the in-depth planning and scheming of a Strategy game? In fact, I think I should visit Ivalice again here in the near future!!!

    9. The Legend of Zelda (Original Release February 21, 1986 on the Nintendo Entertainment System. Also available on the Virtual Console) - You must be wondering what sort of games could POSSIBLY be so great that a gem such as this one would only make #9, right? Let me assure you, it isn't because this game is crap. In fact, this game does take the honor of being the MOST OLD SKOOL game on my list here. This game offered many great things to the original gamers back in the day: swords, evil and annoying monsters, boss fights, power-up, BOMBS, fairies, dungeons, a Princess to save, and a second quest. Yep, all that and more all rolled into this classic. I have spent HOURS AND HOURS playing this game, and every minute spent with it is a minute spent quite well. Forget the Ocarina, who cares about traveling into the Past. You don't need to awaken the Wind, or be around at Twilight. THIS is the Zelda game that stands above them all. Without this one, gaming as we know it would be much different.

    8. Super Metroid (Original Release March 19, 1994 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Also available on the Virtual Console) - This game did a great many things right. It took every success of Metroid, learned from some of the low points in Metroid 2, and pieced together one of the greatest games ever. This game does happen to be the best of the action-adventure games, in my eyes. The power-ups are incredible. The music matches perfectly. The boss battles are amazing, to say the least. The game play and mechanics are near perfect. If there is any game out there that could be considered ideal, this would take that title. I could go on and on ranting about this game, or you could just heed my advice and go pick this game up and play it yourself. It is well worth any price you would have to pay, despite it being ranked at number 8.

    7. Goldeneye 007 (Original Release August 23, 1997 on the Nintendo 64) - Forget Halo, Unreal Tournament, Half-Life 2, and any other first person shooter out there that might come to mind. This game is THE cream of the crop when it comes to a FPS game. Its first person mode was challenging enough to allow some level of replay value along the way. Where this game really shines, in my eyes, is with its multiplayer madness. There is no other game out there that I have enjoyed playing more with a group of friends than this one (Although Rock Band is quickly making a case for that honor!), and to this day I swear my time spent with this game has ruined forever my ability to be any sort of decent at Halo. Who could deny the joys of having three friends together on License to Kill mode, running around trying to chop each other to death? This game, for the longest time, was able to cling to my top five. It has, as you can see, fallen a few spots in recent years. Despite that, it is still one game that is near and dear to my heart. They need to add this to XBox Live. Right now. XD

    6. Final Fantasy IV (Original Release July 19, 1991 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Also available on the Playstation, Wonderswan Color, Game Boy Advance, and Nintendo DS) - What is there to be said about this gem of a game? You have a wonderful plot with fantastic, memorable characters (Kain is the ultimate bad-ass). You have innovations around every corner (what RPG prior to this took you to the moon, or let you fly on a Chocobo, or have a man of darkness turn to the light?). This game holds the record, in my personal life, for number of complete playthroughs. My other two favorite Final Fantasy games are getting closer with each trial run, but this one is resolute in its solidity. It is getting yet another play right now on my DS (as slow as my progress on that has been) and I have "rediscovered" why this game is truly a classic. I used to be anti-remake. Those around for the Braska Spira days remember this, I am sure. He was all for updated graphics and new features. I still think that is not a necessity, but I do think they did a fine job with this one. The difficulty is increased, but not to the point of impossibility (I sure do love an added challenge!). The graphics and map system are pleasant. The augment system is interesting, yet not game breaking so far. In fact, this DS replay is what took this game up a notch over Goldeneye this time around. I would recommend a play to anyone.

    5. Chrono Trigger (Original Release March 11, 1995 on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Also available on the Playstation and Nintendo DS) - This game was revolutionary in its time. An RPG with multiple endings available to play, allowing an incredible replay value to a game with an awesome story and fantastic character development. The soundtrack is impressive, and the battle system was great. It still is, which will undoubtedly be proven with the recent release on the DS. You get to travel through time, what more could you ask for? I have several distinct memories with this game. My oldest one is when I first played through the game, I named the robot Rolo, because I was eating the candy when I got him and couldn't come up with a fitting name at the time. I remember how incredibly awesome Magus was, how noble Frog was. I still enjoy playing around in the carnival. I need to replay this game again. Soon. *Buys the DS game*

OLD SKOOL - A positive appellation referring to when things weren't flashy but empty of substance, were done by hard work, didn't pander to the lowest common denominator, and required real skill. Labour-saving devices, shortcuts that reduce quality and quitting before the task is done are not characteristics of "old skool."

In reference to computer games, refers to a game that had substantial playability without flashy graphics or eye candy. Old skool gamers appreciate difficult maneuvers, careful planning, and scorched earth policies.

In reference to role-playing games, old skool refers to games that tested players' wits, could kill off careless characters, and required dedication and inner strength to play. Old skool games didn't pander to the ideas that everyone is created equal, that all options are open to all races, that the markets were somehow free, and that a quasi-medieval society could have near 100% literacy.

    See also classic.

Representing the Old Skool ways since 1984.

You know I'm going to do something a little different this year, and I think it'll be a good idea for future versions of this thread. I'm going to list my favorites this year and ONLY include games I've actually played this year. Sure I love FFVI and Tactics, but I haven't actually played them at ALL within the last year (FFVI even longer). SO even though I doubt my choices will add much to the grand list, I'm standing by these choices as my favorites in 2008

    1. Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii)
    2. Mega Man 9 (Wiiware)
    3. Uncharted: Drake's Fortune (PS3)
    4. Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations (DS)
    5. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
    6. Sin and Punishment (N64 / VC)
    7. Sonic 3 and Knuckles (Genesis via the Sonic Mega Collection on GC)
    8. Super Mario RPG (SNES / VC)
    9. Super Metroid (SNES / VC)
    10. Final Fatasy IV (DS)
    11. The King of Fighters 98 Ultimate Match (PS2)
